POH+W Architects is designing a new center for family fun in Birmingham, Alabama. The project is located on the former State Fair grounds and Birmingham International Raceway site, once home to horse racing, motorcycle racing, and NASCAR events. In response to neighborhood advocacy for a community-focused activity center, the project reimagines the site as an inclusive destination.
Design Model:

The architectural design draws inspiration from the local context and reflects a sensitivity to community priorities. The goal is to create a welcoming, open, and engaging environment that fosters connection and a sense of belonging. A key design strategy is achieving an appropriate scale through a series of smaller, interconnected buildings that create a comfortable and approachable experience.
Design Model:

The project features a central gathering area with a variety of family-friendly activities, including a roller-skating rink, a bowling alley, video gaming, party spaces, and more. POH+W is also developing custom logos and signage for exterior and interior spaces, enhancing the facility’s energetic vibe.
